Currently I'm backing up my notes by making a copy of ~/.local/share/notes/. However it would be handy to have a menu-entry to export notes to an xxx archive. What do you think?
Can you give more examples of possible exports? Does this still make sense with the ability to customize the notes path (bug 6766)?
No, not really. Easy backups was the main reason. As far as I'm concerned #6766 fits my needs perfectly (thanks!): I'll simply set up the notes dir in Dropbox. But it would make sense to explain to users the potential use of the 'custom dir' feature, perhaps through a tooltip.
Well, the thing is if I implement exports I'll be prompted for imports :) Sooo, let's see if someone else feels the need for this feature and keep it postponed for now. As of today it's not a mandatory feature.
In the meantime I discovered that it was useful to make automatic backups of notes using general purpose software such as SpiderOak. (See Bug 8268. And when Bug 6766 gets released, even Dropbox could be used for doing backups.) So given this, and that the notes are easily accessible on the FS via a FM and a text editor, having such functionality inside Notes would simply mean cluttering the UI. I'd propose to WONTFIX the request.

+1000 until Bug 12078 is fixed. tar.gz all groups of notes away with a timestamp after notes got synced to disk - before notes terminates (terminating xfce4 session). Extract a packed file on request by an menu entry and reload notes with the new set of groups and notes.
