This is because: - More flexible, open the terminal at other places than the current folder - Out of the way from the normal context menu so ordinary users don't see it so much - Currently it's inaccessible if "Show as detailed list" is selected. i agree this would be very handy, because to my knowledge there still is no keyboard shortcut to switch Location Selector.
As far as just the buttons are concerned, an implementation of both features would be relatively easy.
