On installing Firefox 11.0, fill-in fields are accompanied by a keyboard popup, which can't be dismissed. This makes working with the browser inconvienent, to say the least. The problem does not occur with the Gnome3 desktop, so I'm assuming that the problem stems from an interaction between xfwm and Firefox.
FF 11 works just fine here, can you elaborate? - What popup? - Any particular site? - Assistive technology enabled?
Popup is a keyboard. 3 rows of symbols, alpha/numeric+symbols choice by a 'button' at the lower left. It's summoned/attached when the cursor is in a fill-in field. Any such -- this one, for example. It certainly sounds like something that would belong to "assistive technology", but I've been unable to find where any such is enabled. It might also be that vor some reason xfce thinks there is no keyboard. The setting for keyboard is "system defaults"
I should have mentioned that the system in question is a laptop
xfce does not so that by itself, you most likely have enabled "Launch GNOME service on startup" and enabled on screen keyboard (what you describe looks like GOK). The system being a laptop is most likely irrelevant and xfce does not think yet, unfortunately, HAL's been deprecated now, too bad for Mr. Kubrick ^_~
It is true that "Launch GNOME service on startup" was enabled,unintentionally. I don't know about the on-screen keyboard, but who knows what GNOME will do, right? Thanks for the assist.
Do you have a process called "gok" running? Maybe it was started somehow unintentionally and is now restored along with the session? Unfortunately I do not know a lot about gnome accessibility, maybe the following link could be of some help: http://projects.gnome.org/accessibility/about.html
GNOME Services provided a couple of minor features whose value certainly did not compensate for the annoyance that came with the on-screen keyboard. That's been fixed and the GNOME Services have been banished forever. In any case, there was not a "gok" process running.
