XFCE really needs to provide the org.gnome.settingsdaemon.mediakeys service so that when the XF86Audio* keys are pressed the appropriate DBus signals are emitted. An example implementation of this in python can be found here: http://code.google.com/p/mediakeys-daemon/ It currently lacks the ability to listen for the key events and instead relies on keybindings being made that call that same program with arguments. A more complete solution would include binding to the X11 keys so that an external binding was not necessary.

I guess sadly this didn't make it into 4.10. I will have to keep running my own proxy for this. :-( I'm also noting that the Target Milestone for this feature on this ticket is 4.6. I think that ship has sailed already. :-) Can we get that updated to something realistic just to keep expectations in check?
