Logout Alters Number of Workspaces

RESOLVED: MOVED

Description ladyquelambe 2011-06-22 00:31:37 CEST
Set number of workspaces with Settings Manager. Logging out and logging back in changes the number of workspaces to 1 even though session settings are set to be saved. Settings Editor shows no discrepancy. No issues resetting number of workspace in Settings Manager, but problem happens with each logout/login.

Odd, it's been working fine for years.

Probably a stoopid question but worth asking anyway, can you check that you're running xfwm4 as the window manager, and not compiz? (compiz uses one single workspace subdivided in viewports, whereas xfwm4 uses workspaces, so running compiz would reset the number of workspaces to 1)

Yes, I definitely use xfwm4. I had problems with it not starting up on login/logout, so I had to add it to my autostart applications. I don't even have compiz installed.

Well that's not normal and might be an indocation that something is broken with your setup.

xfwm4 will register with the session manager and will be automatically restarted on next login, you definitely do not need to add it anywhere in autostart.

Did you try creating a new user and test with a default setup?

Hi, I also ran into this issue as well a month or so ago when trying out XFCE. Upon every login, my number of workspaces would be set to one.

I just wanted to post a link to this related Ubuntu bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xfwm4/+bug/787934

Specifically this comment:

In his case, the number of workspaces are being reset to four, but I assume it's being caused by the same issue. He wonders if it might be an xfconfd bug.

Hi,

I have the same problem. I'm on a fresh fedora 16 alpha XFCE4 installation. The number of workspaces is always 1 after logout/login.

Also, and I didn't find out what really is happening, I do have a window manager immediately after login, with a theme I did not configure. This window manager shortly after login (before I can do anything sensible) terminates and leaves me with no wm at all. Starting xfwm4 manually everything is fine.
