When started in console the output is the following when pluging a USB device (external hard-drive disk, JMicron controller, sd*1: ntfs, sd*2:ext4): ------------------------------------------------- thunar-volman: Unsupported USB device type. thunar-volman: Unsupported USB device type. thunar-volman: Unknown block device type. thunar-volman: Could not detect the volume corresponding to the device. thunar-volman: Could not detect the volume corresponding to the device. ------------------------------------------------- I have then rebuilt volman with debug feature. A console dump of thunar under identical circumstances is provided as an attachment. I can also reproduce that bug with all other external hard drives I have, with a SDHC memory card, and with a USB stick. (in fact I did not find any device that gets correctly recognized and added as a volume to Thunar left column). I understand this bug was supposedly fixed with the release of thunar-volman-0.5.1. Installed: exo-0.5.3 libxfce4ui-4.7.2 libxfce4util-4.7.2 thunar-1.1.1 thunar-volman-0.5.1 xfconf-4.7.2 udev-160 (all built without debug) (Gentoo ~amd64 ; feel free to ask for any other/dump/rebuilt/experimental patch testing/info that may be needed ; TIA)
Created attachment 3058 Console dump of thunar showing failure messages (with debug)
Created attachment 3062 Console output from thunar-volman after inserting USB stick About same setup as original reporter here. I can see /dev/sdf1 and `udisks --mount /dev/sdf1` works. But nothing is showing up in Thunar...
This bug was a issue with thunar, not with thunar-volman. The problem was that my gvfs was built without gnome-disk-utility support, everything started working after fixing that. Please close this report as worksforme/invalid. Meanwhile I've fixed the depend in Gentoo's package (the original reporter is also on Gentoo). So all good.
Thanks Samuli Building now the whole load of new dependencies this brings in. I will close asap.

Ok, it needs some work to have all the policykit and friends working together. Thunar once showed the media but complained about permissions. But now after a re logging, no devices are showed anymore. Sorry guys, don't have the time right now to carry on further testing and give feedback. Reverting back to hal-supported thunar :(
