Hi, I installed the xfce 4.2rc1 with the installer provided by os-cillation. During the installation all was fine. I installed the xfce4.2rc1 in the home directory ~/temporal/xfce4rc1/xfce4dir [I could give you the .xfce4.installer-log if you need it; I don't know how can I attach archives here] First time I entered in xfce4.2rc1, I went to preferences-->user interface pref-->icons preferences. I observed two things: 1) There are few icons in that list while in my system I have a lot of them. These icon themes are only from ~/.icons. The icon system-wide themes are not listed. My place of system-wide icons is not unusual: /usr/share/icons/ll total 152 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3949 2004-11-01 01:07 abiword_48.png drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2004-06-25 13:37 Amaranth drwxr-xr-x 10 root root 4096 2004-08-06 17:39 Crux drwxr-xr-x 8 root root 4096 2003-08-11 15:20 Crystal drwxr-xr-x 9 root root 4096 2004-09-25 15:37 crystalsvg -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1020 2004-08-18 03:27 dasher.png lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 5 2004-06-08 22:41 Default -> gnome lrwxr-xr-x 1 root root 10 2004-09-25 15:37 default.kde -> crystalsvg drwxr-xr-x 11 root root 4096 2004-08-06 17:40 Flat-Blue drwxr-xr-x 12 root root 4096 2004-06-08 22:41 gnome drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 2004-06-25 13:37 Gorilla drwxr-xr-x 14 root root 4096 2004-06-24 19:17 hicolor drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 4096 2004-06-16 17:17 ikons drwxr-xr-x 10 root root 4096 2004-07-27 00:49 Industrial -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 22831 2004-04-29 01:39 irate.xpm drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 4096 2004-06-16 17:17 kdeclassic drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 4096 2004-06-16 17:17 kids drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 2004-07-20 14:50 locolor drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 2004-06-16 17:17 Locolor drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2004-06-25 13:37 Lush drwxr-xr-x 8 root root 4096 2003-09-29 17:59 noia_kde_100 drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2004-06-25 13:37 Nuvola drwxr-xr-x 8 root root 4096 2004-08-06 17:39 Sandy drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 4096 2004-06-16 17:17 slick drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2004-08-06 17:39 Smokey-Blue drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2004-08-06 17:39 Smokey-Red drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2004-05-27 17:25 SphereCrystal drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 2004-06-16 17:17 Technical -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 14648 2003-06-18 12:57 tux-icon.xpm drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2004-06-25 13:37 Wasp drwxr-xr-x 19 root root 4096 2004-11-14 20:06 wm-icons -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 633 2004-10-09 00:24 xchat_mini.xpm lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 2004-04-22 17:31 xine.xpm -> ../pixmaps/xine.xpm So the system-wide icon themes (in usual place) are not listed. 2) In this list of few themes, I have selected "hicolor". But, when I click in other icon themes, the "hicolor" desapeared, and so I could not select another time. Why "hicolor" disapeared?. Why could I not select it another time?. I consider it a bug [an item of the list is dropped without any reason and the user could not select when he/she wants] These are two bugs, but I considered better to put together because it were consequences of one action.
As mentioned on the mailing list, it is normal behaviour for "hicolor" to disappear when you select something else; it is only there as a backup option.

Related to "hicolor" theme. Formally, if it appears it could not be drop "without" aparent reason. The user will see strange this bevaviour. Is it so dificult to mantain this item in the list as any other theme?
Refering to "/usr/share/icons/ll". Sorry. The place has to be "/usr/share/icons/". And I run ll in that directory. Sorry. So, instead of "/usr/share/icons/ll" it has to be: "cd /usr/share/icons/ ll" So the place of my system-wide icons is usual Xan.
I have a similar and possibly related problem as I mentioned in bug 426. My /usr/share/icons are available to select unlike yours, but no icons change when traversing the list. However, icons that are in ~/.icons are both selectable and work. I have no other window manager on my machine.
since in another bug, you noted that your XDG_DATA_DIRS variable (which controls the icon search paths as well) was nonstandard and messed up, this definitely is a problem with your setup. please either unset XDG_DATA_DIRS before starting xfce, or make sure that /usr/share is listed in it.
Brian, For closing this bug: - I admit that the guilty is from the variable XDG_DATA_DIRS that in the old xfce (4.0.6) has one value and in the new xfce another (4.2rc1). But why when I installed xfce4.2rc1 it did not "copy" the value of XDG_DATA_DIRS of my old xfce 4.0.6?. A purely desktop user will thank that xfce installer automatically copy the key values of XDG_* variables from his/her old xfce to the new, and that he/she will not have to do that manually. Perhaps a revision of installer is good in that sense. - Over "hicolor" theme, I think that formally there is still a bug. Formally, "hicolor" is a icon theme and it's physically present (in $prefix/xfce4dir/share/icons/). It's not logical that I can't choose that icon theme and yes the others in the same directory ($prefix/xfce4dir/share/icons/Rodent). At least formally, it's a bug. Sorry if you think I'm a few tiresome, but I try that xfce were, still, great. Thanks and regards, Xan.
