When using a menu that is close to the right of the screen, the submenu is shown to the left instead of hte right. But to select it, one must use the right arrow. This is confusing, and it should allow the user to also use the left-arrow.
This is a toolkit issue. Report this to gtk if it's a big deal to you, though I doubt they'll want to change it.
