I have the mixer in my panel, and looking at syslog while doing other stuff from another box, I noticed that there was a segfault on xfce4-mixer every time I quit xfce. I don't have any backtrace or core yet, so I can't help much, but I still open a bug report so it's not lost. I should probably debug this. IMHO it's not really important because it only happens when you quit Xfce (I don't think it happens when you just close the panel, does it?) and it doesn't make the panel crash. No settings are lost either. I won't get to it before 4.6.0 though, so I'll target this for 4.6.1.
Afaik it's harmless and only when quitting Xfce yes.
Is this still an issue with 4.9.0? Can you try to get a backtrace using the instructions at http://docs.xfce.org/xfce/xfce4-panel/debugging?
