Ristretto should not have a fixed window size. Instead it should make itself fit to the image’s dimensions where possible. The window should resize down to small images. But there should be a minimum size here since otherwise the window decorations won’t be visible anymore. The window should also resize up to large images. Again, there should be a maximum size since not everyone will like to have Ristretto take up the whole desktop and even more (Imagemagick’s display does the latter and it sucks) Either by letting the user specify the minimum and maximum size or by defining sane default values I would like to see Ristretto resize a bit smarter with this.
Not quite sure how I should implement this, but I'll work on it.
Simon, A few years of development later, I am inclined to think that this feature is not really desirable. A 'fluid' window around images... What do you think?
Hm, I never thought about this feature before and to be honest I don't think it's desirable. I'd rather consider it distracting and odd to have the window resize when switching through images. All in all I'm not sure what the gain would be.

The request was more about the initial size Ristretto shows at startup. The size should stay the same upon switching between windows. But since Ristretto remembers its last size, this is actually not that important to me anymore. IIRC it didn’t back then.
Yeah, personally I think remembering the previous window-size is much more useful than having a window-size determined by the picture (or now actually: folder) you open.
Ok, can we agree that I close this bug as a WONTFIX?
Closing ticket.
