A Debian user requested that the netload plugin try to make some effort to figure out what interfaces are available and choose a default appropriately so that this plugin works out of the box. The full bug report is at: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=331170
Maybe it helps to look into netspeed-applet from gnome. It works there flawlessly. http://projects.gnome.org/netspeed/
I second this, it would be great if netload plugin had some netspeed-applet like behaviour, showing only throughput for the defaultroute interface. At present time, on my laptop, I have to set three netload plugins in my panel, one for ppp0, one for eth0 and one for wlan0, since, depending of where I am, I may use any of these interfaces for my internet connection. Maybe the minimal change that could be done to netload plugin could be to let the user enter the word "default" (or its translation in any language) in the config dialog network device field : in that case, netload would display the defaultroute interface and, if there is none, it would fill the in and out monitors with one given color, like grey (or add a config option to let the user choose which "inactive" color he wants)
I wanted to request the very same feature and I found this issue; this comment is here just to show that someone is still interested in this.
Still have this issue on Fedora 21, xfce4-netload-plugin.x86_64 version 1.2.0-6.fc21 . Since I use both wired and wireless internet, it would be very helpful if it could detect which ones are connected. On linux systems at least this could be done this way (I have used in a script I use to download stuff): http://stackoverflow.com/q/808560/2943276
I also tend to jump network interfaces often and I'm very much affected by this. I just wanted to file a report suggesting to add an option to monitor all active interfaces. Monitoring just the default route would be acceptable.
I seconded this feature request in comment #2 in 2011 ! I'm still missing it. Any chance that it happens one day ? thanks
