strace is useless; please post a gdb backtrace.  Though I suspect you've just found a dupe of bug #3079.

i've just updated to r26054 and it works just fine.

Coincidence - only changes between those 2 revs are a translation update in xfdesktop and some change to xfwm4.

That's what surprised me as well. I've recompiled xfdesktop with --enable-debug=yes to get that backtrace but it evidently solved my problem. So I can probably reproduce the problem when I disable debugging again but that won't help much. Anything I can do to help solve this?
