I'm a noob but I'll do my best I am unable to use xfce4-mixer to control my volume settings (the same applies to the volume control menu item). My laptop is equipped with a "Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)". I can use alsamixer and aumix to control my volume very well. In the console when I run "xfce4-mixer" the following output results: bash-3.1# xfce4-mixer alsa: error: master control not found. I even tried to guess wildly, but to no avail. alsa: info: developer information follows: (send E-Mail to Developer with that) alsa: * Headphone,0 alsa: * Front,0 <--- hint hint alsa: * Front Mic,0 <--- hint hint alsa: * Front Mic Boost,0 <--- hint hint alsa: * Surround,0 <--- hint hint alsa: * Center,0 <--- hint hint alsa: * LFE,0 <--- hint hint alsa: * Side,0 <--- hint hint alsa: * Line,0 <--- hint hint alsa: * CD,0 <--- hint hint alsa: * Mic,0 <--- hint hint alsa: * Mic Boost,0 <--- hint hint alsa: * PC Speaker,0 <--- hint hint alsa: * Capture,0 alsa: * Capture,1 alsa: * Channel Mode,0 alsa: * Input Source,0 alsa: * Input Source,1 alsa: info: end of developer information alsa: error: master control not found. I hope I have provided enough information. Thanks, Stuart Pulliam
Yeah, I have all the information I need now, thanks to you :-) The mixer tries to find your master playback control (the one that affects the volume of all the others effectively) and your soundcard manufacturer thought it necessary to be creative and not just call it "Master" ;-) By now this is history, since I removed Automatic Master Selection from the xfce 4.4 branch (it causes too much trouble). Unfortunately, now the user has to go to the panel plugin item preferences once (and select by hand which is to be the master) to make the panel plugin work. So, in the 4.4.2 release, it should be "fixed". If not, be sure to tell me. Out of curiousity, which one controls overall volume for you? "Front" or "Center" ? Or something else?
Danny, "front" controls the overall volume for me. I am able to get xfce-mixer to work occasionally somehow, although I am not to sure how. I have since reformatted my / partition.
