Description Friedrich Graeter 2007-03-22 23:25:26 CET
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; de; rv:1.8.1.2) Gecko/20070312 Firefox/2.0.0.2
Build Identifier:

The home directory symbol on the desktop has the German title "Persönliches Verzeichnis". However, on my system the icon label will be shortenend to "Persönliches ...", so the full label won't be shown completly. If I select the icon, the complete label will be shown in two lines:

Persönliches
Verzeichnis

However there is enough space on the screen to show the entire label in two lines even if it is not selected - so there is no real reason to shorten it.

Another problem is, that if I select the icon and the full label will be shown, the second line of the text will not shown centered but left-oriented. This looks a little bit ugly.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. German translation
2. Symbol size 32
3. System font for the desktop icon labels
4. System font Sans 9
5. X11 screen resolution to 75 DPI

Actual Results:
- The icon label will be shortened, even if there is enough space on the screen until the icon is not selected

- If the icon is selected, the text will be wrapped correctly and shown completly, but the second line of the text is not centered but left-oriented

The left orientation is due to a pango bug. If I center them, the text gets cut off.

Otherwise, this is intended behavior and isn't going to be changed. Different languages have different-length strings, and it's impossible to cater to them all.

Fair enough, but would it be possible to have it configurable then?
