Default archive type should not be whatever is first alphabetically in the list of installed backends, but something which is more likely to be needed (i.e. zip or tar.gz)
Also for directories do not allow formats which do not work on them, such as bz2 which silently produces a 0-legth archive

addition: when trying to create a new archive by using the thunar plugin, .bz2 and .gz shouldn't be available if more than one file is selected.
