Hi, I have a 4k display notebook, it can be made about to work with this resolution. But its a pain. And after many setting there are icons that are small, button icons that are small. On the panel i want more bigger things but cannot be set. If I plug the second monitor what has a smaller resolution (full hd), then there is everything is really big. Please make the HiDPI work, and easy to use/user friendly. I'm using ubuntu 20.04, fresh install... Using xfce 4.14.3
Ubuntu changes the default window manager theme to something unusable. Try using the default theme "Default-hdpi" or "Default-xhdpi" instead (go to Settings → Window Manager → Style)

Not good in what sense? Can you elaborate? BTW, it is selected automatically if the theme is "Default" (see commit a58d44fa).
Out of curiosity, do you have the scale set to “2” in the “Appearance” settings?
(In reply to Olivier Fourdan from comment #4) > Out of curiosity, do you have the scale set to “2” in the “Appearance” > settings? I do not understand why I need to set anything after a fresh install. In 2020 I think a window managers basic feature to set the correct screen "layout". But: - I set the window manager style to default-xhdpi -> but everithing keeps small, the window headers get bigger - set the correct (calculated dpi value) to 282ppi in settings/appearance -> many things get bigger, but many icons and etc was still small - then I set dpi value back to the original default value - then I set settings/apperance/settings/windows size 2x -> the windows get bigger, but many things icons etc still small - so I set back the windows size to 1x, set ppi value to 250, and I started to set all the icons, panel, etc size to bigger (but the panel notifications have a maximum size) it is now about to work after many tweaking but: things are still not good: - some type of ikons still small (like the skype icon on the top of the notification area) - if I plug an external second HD monitor near the 4k display, then on the HD monitor everything is really big, so it is unusable (that is the biggest problem) - first login screen is really small (after a screensaver the other login screen is good) - many icons (inside windows, (eg on buttons) are really small Why cant the system set the correct dpi values from hdmi information (or at least set by hand is stg is going wrong) and then calculate all the needed sizes for the screen elements?

In > 2020 I think a window managers basic feature to set the correct screen > "layout". > I think you're getting confused. You filed this bug against the window manager (xfwm4), but it is not the component in charge of computing the DPI so I am just trying to help determine which component would be better suited for your bug. All the items you list apart from the window manager decorations are not xfwm4. - The scale should be set by the settings manager based on the DPI, I agree. - You should not have to tweak the DPI manually, setting the the scale is enough - The icons inside apps depends on the applications I'm afraid - X11 / gtk does not have per output scale, so you cannot mix hidpi/lodpi monitors under X11 (this is not a limitation in xfce). If being able to have a lo-dpi external monitor connected to your laptop with hi-dpi is what you're after, then I suggest you switch to Wayland to have per output scale. I would recommend you try gnome-shell as a Wayland compositor which provides a good mixed DPI environment.
