I am able to reproduce this both on a live system and within HyperV vm. 1. Try Xubuntu 2. Install virtualbox: $ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install virtualbox virtualbox-ext-pack 3. Run virtualbox: $ virtualbox 4. Logout: $ xfce4-session-logout -l The result is that the virtualbox process ends, but the system does not logout! I couldn't find any logfiles, or systemd-inhibit entries that seems relevant. I've no idea where to look next.
I tested with xfce4-session 4.13 and virtualbox 6.0, and I can confirm this bug. The process does not end immediately though.
