When opening files on a CIFS mount point (e.g. /mnt/server/share), Mousepad 0.4.0 gives no errors, but displays a blank window as if the file were empty. Mousepad displays the file contents properly if the same file is opened from a Thunar network path (e.g. smb://server/share). Leafpad and other editors do not exhibit this behavior. Tested in Xubuntu 16.04.3 and 18.04 Beta 2.
Created attachment 9239 diff I am attaching a quick diff which adds proper handling for smb. Support for other protocols (nfs, mtp, etc.) is probably needed also.
No error is given when the target is not mounted, so more work is needed here.
