With dual monitors, I have the following problem: The displays are switched between the two monitors, with respect to the mouse pointer's address. To reproduce: - Move the cursor to the left monitor and right-click on the desktop. - The pop-up menu appears on the *right* monitor, in the same position where the mouse pointer appears to be located on the left. Same behavior for any click, right- or left-, on any window/toolbar/etc that I have tried. That makes the GUI unusable. Setup is FC24, Kernels 4.10.8 and 4.10.9, with nouveau graphics drivers and an NVIDIA Quadro K620 card. Monitors are configured side-by-side with no rotation. The only thing that is slightly different from standard is that the right monitor is my primary. This does not happen with Kernel 4.9.13, nor does it happen in Gnome Classic or KDE. I use GDM as a login manager and everything works fine there, too, with any kernel.
Please provide the output of "xrandr -q --verbose".

Note: the following is with the 4.9.13 kernel, for which this problem does NOT exist. Let me know if that's no good and I'll get it with the other kernel (which is a little harder, since I can't really use the mouse, but I'll just re-direct it to a file, re-boot and access it that Sorry, I misspoke. The mouse is useable, but not useFUL, in that clicks are registered at the same relative location where the cursor is displayed, but on the opposite monitor. That was my original issue. In terms of kernels, as I said in my original post, the problem only happens with 4.10 kernels, and not with the 4.9 kernel I have. However, since the problem does not appear in Gnome or KDE, it seems to me like it is something related to XFCE. Admittedly, though, whether the Window Manager is the right component here, or there is another component of XFCE is unclear. Could there be something in the way in which xfwm4 interacts with Xorg that would cause this? I too would have suspected an Xorg problem, but then this should be visible in all desktop environments, the way I understand it.
No, no component in xfce depends directly on the kernel, especially for input/output, it all relies on Xorg and its drivers, and all the input stack. It is true, however, that Xorg input driver depend on the kernel input drivers. One simple test would be to try with xev, see if the reported root coords of pointer events are correct in xev. FWIW, I am using F25 with kernel 4.10.8 and all is fine in xfce here.
Will be happy to try that, but I have no experience with xev (just fired it up and played with it now). Can you suggest a good way to use that to troubleshoot? Shall I just stick the window in the top left corner of the screen, move the pointer around and see what the coordinates are, that it displays?
Just run xev , move the xev window (you can even resize it if needed) to the left monitor - the one where the menu should appear -, click inside the xev window and check the root coordinates (root: (xxx,yyy) ...) for ButtonPress, EnterEvent and ButtonRelease events.
OK, I did this. I moved the xev window to the top-left corner of the *right* monitor, then moved the cursor to the top left corner of the *left* monitor, and the output was showing coordinates on the *left* monitor (i.e. low numbers in the horizontal). So it actually looks like this is not a mouse-pointer address problem, but a display problem, in that the two displays are shown incorrectly, but really the system thinks the windows are where they're supposed to be, while the mouse pointer is actually displayed where it's supposed to be. Something else that has just appeared: if you suspend the system and then wake it back up, the problem goes away. I'm guessing that in waking the system up something re-probes the monitors and once that's done everything is correct.
In comment 3, you mentioned the values were from "the 4.9.13 kernel, for which this problem does NOT exist", which is not really useful, it would be much more interesting to capture the xrandr setup when the problem occurs. Also, when the problem shows up, does "xrandr --auto" fix the issue? Or what if you try to re-apply the xrandr setup using the xfce4-display-settings, does it make any difference?
One more thing, does the issue occur with with one toolkit in particular (gtk+, Qt)? does it occur with a more basic toolkit such as, say, Motif or Xaw? (nedit or xterm menu for example)
Toolkits: I tried nedit, and this has the same problem. Since most of the stuff running is gtk, I tried firing up Kontact (which I believe should be Qt), and still have the same problem. If you set the left monitor to be primary, does it make any difference?
No, changing the primary monitor does not make a difference. A few other things I tried: xrandr --auto has no effect. With xfce4-display-settings, there's lots of interesting stuff going on. I should have screen 2 on the left and screen 1 on the right, with screen 1 being the primary. The way they are displayed is the opposite (screen 1 on the right, screen 2 on the left). As stated before, the system acts as if the screens were configured properly (i.e. 2 left, 1 right). When I start xfce4-display-settings, it actually displays the configuration I should have (i.e. 2 left, 1 right). However, when I hit "Identify Displays", then 1 comes up on the *left* and 2 on the *right*, i.e. the way they are displayed. Another interesting thing: I wanted to take a screenshot to show you this, and the screenshot comes up as 2 left, 1 right (i.e. the way the system acts, but not the way things are displayed). As soon as I make any major change (such as change one of the monitors' resolutions) in xfce4-display-settings and apply it, the problem goes away. Another thing of note. I have no Xorg config file that configures the monitor position. When I first get to my login screen (gdm) the screens are displayed by default as 1 left, 2 right [never bothered to research how to change this]. So it seems like when XFCE starts, the transition from that to the 2 left, 1 right that I configured with xfce4-display-settings has something going wrong.
Well, I am now convinced this has nothing to do with xfwm4 itself! It's either nouveau or Xorg (or less likely xfce4-display-settings).
OK, try this: 1. Make sure you have "xterm" installed $ sudo dnf install xterm 2. As root, create a bare failsafe session as follow: $ sudo bash -c "cat > /usr/share/xsessions/xterm.desktop << EOF [Desktop Entry] Version=1.0 Name=Xterm session Comment=Use this session to run a bare xterm Exec=xterm Icon= Type=Application EOF" 3. Log out from your existing session, and login again using the newly created "Xterm session" 4. That will start an X session with *just* an xterm, from that xterm., run xfwm4. $ xfwm4 & 5. Run another application, and try to reproduce.

Then I started xfce4-display-settings. Displays were identified correctly, but making changes to the display configuration had no effect. Then I started Kde System Settings and changed the configuration of the monitors to 2 left, 1 right. After applying changes, the problem re-occurred. Any idea what this might point to?
One more thing: when first logging into the Xterm session, I had the default wallpaper (the Fedora one, blue with stars) displayed in the background. After starting xfwm4, when dragging windows around, they left behind a trail of just plain grey. Not sure if that has anything to do with what we're talking about here, but I figured I would mention everything I saw.

That's wrong - I would advise to use xrandr commands instead of the gui tools for experiment. > Any idea what this might point to? Definitely not xfwm4 :p Again, this is most likely a driver/kernel issue as booting an older kernel makes the issue go away. Yeah, that's completely unrelated, xfwm4 compositor doesn't repaint the root win and relies on a desktop window, which you don;t have with a single xterm session. Nothing to worry about.
OK, I think we got it. I did the following: - Log into the xterm session. - Use xrandr to switch the position of the two displays [after I figured out how to do that]. --> Bingo! The problem appears. So looks like this is not XFCE-related, then. Still, this doesn't happen with Gnome or KDE, but maybe those guys probe the monitors, or do whatever the salient event is that fixes this problem when I suspend and re-wake in XFCE. Might be a design question whether XFCE might want to choose to do this upon startup, but obviously that's way above my pay-grade, so I really don't have an opinion. The remaining question might be why xfce4-display-settings behaves strangely when this occurs. Olivier, thank you for your effort in helping troubleshoot this!
