With version 0.1.31 (which I cannot select above), there is no longer a border drawn around generated PDF icons. This make it particularly hard to see the icons, which generally have a white background, when thunar also has a white background. Reverting to version 0.1.30, wiping the thumbnails in ~/.thumbnails and ~/.cache/thumbnails, and restarting tumblerd returns the generation of the borders.
I'm still seeing this issue with version 0.2.0.
Hmm, thought thunar is the one drawing frames around thumbnails. But I might be wrong. Possibly you as well reverted thunar from 1.8.x to 1.6.x, together with tumbler ? Thunar master still supports frames around thumbnails, together with a new setting. But for the 4.14 branch it was disabled. Details here: Bug #14433
