When a remote connection (e.g. sftp://foo.com/bar/baz) gets disconnected, Thunar eventually shows the corresponding folder as empty (there really should be an indicator that you're disconnected, like a red background in the location bar, but that's another issue) If one navigates to the parent folder from here (sftp://foo.com/bar), that is also met by an empty view. If one manually enters a *previously visited* location in the location bar (e.g. sftp://foo.com/bar/lol), that is also met with an empty view. But here's the kicker: If one manually enters a *NOT previously visited* location on the same machine (e.g. sftp://foo.com/test), Thunar then goes ahead and reconnects. This is inconsistent, confusing and awkward. Imo, Thunar should automatically try to reconnect at all times when the user navigates a location that was previously connected, but has now become disconnected.
Oh, I forgot to mention: Simply refreshing does not reconnect either.
This should improve a bit in the next release. While it does not reconnect, it will show a better error message and remove the entry from the history, similar to what is done with locations on unmounted devices.
