When on AC or not the icon is the same, and there is no option to show remaining battery life / estimated time til discharged. Except if you click on the battery panel plugin icon which is a little inconvenient.
I can reproduce this bug. When I uncheck and check again the options in settings dialog, the display gets updated. So I guess the plugin doesn't react on upower events. Maybe implementing a timer to update the display can also help.
Works for me on Arch Linux with: - xfce4-power-manager 1.3.2 - upower 0.99.0 - systemd 216
Ok, I rechecked the issue after an hint from Raphael Groner that OP means the xfce4-battery-plugin and not the xfce4-power-manager. Checking the code at http://git.xfce.org/panel-plugins/xfce4-battery-plugin/tree/panel-plugin/battery.c#n327 indicates that the value is read every 60 seconds if acpi is used, http://git.xfce.org/panel-plugins/xfce4-battery-plugin/tree/panel-plugin/battery.c#n343 indicates that the poll is every 30 seconds else. HTH.
To be clear in addition to my last comment: the icon is updated, you have just to wait for it.
