It would be nice if the plugin could be configured to disappear from the panel when there is no new mail, much like the power manager icon. In order to make it appear again, if the user changes his/her mind, a menu entry could be added that opened the preferences, in a similar way to the main window of the dictionary plugin and the settings of the power manager.

Just for clearness, the idea with the suggestion was to save space when seeing the icon was not necessary (I reckon the mail program can be opened from the apps menu in the less usual case that the user just wants to browse previous mail). Also, not seeing the icon makes the user not pay attention unnecessarily.
